Bringing Your Dog to the Lakes
Of course, taking any dog into the countryside should start with understanding how we humans and our four-legged best friends should behave. The National Trust has produced an excellent guide to walking your dog in the Lakes. From understanding how local Lake District Herdwick sheep lamb later (April and May) to being aware of local nesting birds and The Canine Code, this makes for essential reading.
Dog-Friendly Holiday Destinations - Cartmel and the wider Lake District are extremely dog friendly destinations. In the village itself almost all the local pubs and cafes allow dogs to enter. One of our favourite things to do is take our two dogs for a stroll into the village to grab coffee and a bite to eat at Cartmel Coffee on the village square, when the weather’s good they have a small garden as well at the back.
Great Dog Walks in the Area- From Pembroke Cottage, you have easy access to Hampsfell. Just turn left out of the gates and walk up to the first corner in the road. Just after the corner you will find a stile in the stone wall, leading up onto the fell close to Grange Fell golf course. It’s a steep climb but well worth it as the views from the summit are outstanding, with 360-degree views over Morecambe Bay, the whole panorama of Lakeland fells and the entire village of Cartmel. There is another route down which takes you close to the centre of the village. Also in Cartmel, behind the village car park you will a number of paths some level, some heading up the fell behind the racecourse.

Dog Walk with Windermere Views
Also close by is the promenade at Grange-over-Sands, we find this an excellent walk all year round. You can park at the lower car park just behind the Commodore Inn (free after 6pm) and walk under the railway line to access the prom. Turn right to find the promenade cafés and Lido (being slowly renovated) and right to head to the train station where you can cross under the line again and then head back through the ornamental gardens back to the car park.
Fell Foot Park - An absolute favourite Lake District dog friendly walk is at Fell Foot park on Windermere. Just a 10–15-minute drive from the cottage, this National Trust park offers great dog walking routes, fantastic views of fell and lake, and a cosy café in the old boathouse. Parking is plentiful and free for members. A similar experience is available at beautiful Wray Castle on the western shore of the lake.
Tarn Hows and Bowness Marina
Tarn Hows is an iconic Lakeland destination and perfect for dogs with its circular walk around the tarn itself, café and parking available. For something less rural try a walk in Bowness. Park on Glebe Road car park where there is a small adjacent park, or take the path on Rectory Road through to the Marina for a small circular walk back to Marina with lovely lake views.
And Many More - Other dog friendly Lake District attractions include Windermere Lake Cruises, Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway, Grizedale Forest and Lowther Castle. You can also take dogs on Bowness Bay Marina rental boats.
