Lake District Walking Holiday at Pembroke Cottage in Cartmel
Staying at Pembroke Cottage offers the perfect base to explore the breathtaking fell walks in and around the Cartmel area. Although not the epicentre for fell walking in the Lake District, the area around Cartmel has plenty of options for exploring the great outdoors. Take a look at Alfred Wainwrights Guide Number 8, the Outerlying Fells of Lakeland for chapters on some of the local peaks. There is of course an abundance of walking options in the whole of Lakeland that we can’t cover here. Instead, we will just touch on some of the most local options for walking. The full set of Wainwrights guides is in our small lounge library.

Hampsfell
Pembroke Cottage sits on the slopes of Hampsfell, hence the great views from the Garden Room. So it makes sense to start with a walk here. You can access the fell from a stile just up the lane, after the bend. Or you can take an easier access from Spring Bank Road next to the golf course. There is another entry point from Aynsome Road in the village, next to Priors Yeat House, look for the stone steps. From the summit you are rewarded with 360-degree views over Morecambe Bay, Grange Over Sands, and the entire panorama of Lakeland fells.

Mount Barnard, How Barrow and Ellerside Ridge
The slightly smaller fells to the west of the village are Mount Barnard, How Barrow and Ellerside Ridge. There are several walks up onto these from behind the village car park. Again, the summit views are outstanding with clear sight over to the Coniston Range.
Gummers How, Whitbarrow and Humphrey Head
Other local summits of note include Gummers How, which is easy to access from Fell Foot Road and offers spectacular views across Windermere to the larger fells beyond. Whitbarrow to the east offers its own great views over Morecambe Bay and further to the Howgills, start the walk in Witherslack. The smallest summit in Wainwrights guides is Humphrey Head, at the tip of the peninsula and south of Pembroke Cottage. This limestone promontory provides super views across Morecambe Bay, the walk is short at just 2km but visually rewarding.

Loughrigg Fell
At 335m, Loughrigg isn’t high but offers fantastic views over Windermere, the Old Man of Coniston and the Langdale Pikes. Start from White Moss car park for a gentle 3-mile climb, taking in Loughrigg Terrace and Rydal Cave.
Grizedale Forest
Right at the heart of the Lake District, Grizedale Forest offers a large number of trails ranging from 600m to 10 miles, most offering great views of the surrounding lakes and fells. Start from the visitor centre which offers parking, toilet facilities and a café.

Tom Gill to Tarn Hows
For many more walks take a look at the National Trust recommendations. One of their suggestions is Tom Gill to Tarn Hows. Instead of parking at the tarn car park, park further away at the National Trust Glen Mary Bridge Car Park and take the steep woodland path, passing waterfalls to reach Tarn Hows itself with its own circular walk. There is a café and toilets on the tarn car park. The return route affords amazing views of Wetherlam and the other Coniston fells.
