Explore the Lakes
Much as we love to spend time in Pembroke Cottage admiring the view, it is nice to get out and about and the Lake District has plenty to offer. From hiking and exploring historical landmarks to discovering scenic routes, there’s no shortage of things to do in Cartmel, Grange-over-Sands, and the surrounding areas. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing getaway or an action-packed adventure, book your stay today!
Discover Cartmel
In Cartmel village and nearby you must visit Cartmel’s jewel in the crown, the medieval Cartmel Priory and imagine life here hundreds of years ago. Another must visit is Holker Hall, the local big house owned by a branch of the Cavendish family that owns Chatsworth, is set in beautiful parkland with stunning formal gardens. There are great dining and shopping options too. The very popular Yew Tree Barn is a treasure trove of antiques and homeware, with dining options at Harry’s Bar.

Steam Railways and Lake Cruises
Head ten minutes towards Windermere for many more options including the Haverthwaite & Lakeside Steam Railway and Lakeland Motor Museum for bygone travel experiences. Lakeside, at the foot of Windermere, is the terminus for the steam railway and also offers the Lakes Aquarium (great for adults and kids alike) and an embarkation point for bigger boat connections up and down England’s largest lake with Windermere Lake Cruises. There’s also a lovely little vintage ferry over to Fell Foot Park. Further up the lake we highly recommend the Jetty Museum in Bowness, for both its stunningly presented exhibits and the super café and views up and down the lake.
Historic Homes, Halls, and Castles
Beyond Cartmel there are plenty of lovely old Lake District houses to visit close to Pembroke Cottage. Levens Hall is an ancient country house with world class topiary, Sizergh Castle delivers beautiful medieval architecture along with a pub and farm shop on site, Blackwell in Bowness is a delightful Arts and Crafts house with stunning lake views and a tea room, Brantwood on Coniston is the historic home of writer John Ruskin also with super lake and mountain views, shopping and dining. Last but not least, bucolic Hill Top in Near Sawrey (close to beautiful Hawkshead village) was the home of Beatrix Potter for many years.

Scenic Cumbria Coast Line
For an interesting day out consider the railway line at Grange-over-Sands, you can take a short but interesting hop across the Kent Viaduct over Morecambe Bay to Arnside, a lovely seaside village with plenty of shops and eateries and great views back to the Lakeland fells. Go the other way and take the scenic Cumbria Coast Line via Barrow all the way up to Carlise.
Morecambe, Kirkby Lonsdale and Much More - We also recommend visiting the Midland Hotel in Morecambe a stunning restoration of an iconic art-deco hotel, and hopefully in the near future a neighbour to Eden Project North. If you’re out and about in the car why not also hop over to beautiful Kirkby Lonsdale, just a 30 minute drive from Pembroke Cottage, this historic market town is well worth a visit with its great pubs, cafes and shops and great views over the River Lune.
